Give Yourself a Break with Visualization

Don’t Forget to Give Yourself a Break

Stefanie: When we talk about how businesses have to redefine themselves and their interactions with their employees and customers, it’s really important for business owners to give themselves a break. Cut yourself some slack. It’s not just you that’s having to figure this out. The whole world is trying to figure out how to do their job on rollerskates. 

One of the most common signs of stress that I see in business owners is the belief that they’re the only ones going through it. I was listening to you talk about marketing, and how some people do better on one particular social media. The same thing applies to business owners when it comes to the online world.

Zoom may not be your friend right now. That’s ok. Maybe white papers are your friend. Maybe you’re better off going through your client list and putting a poll together. I’m not a marketing professional like you, but what I do know is that you should cut yourself a break as you’re trying to determine your next steps forward. That’s what works. 

Meditation Techniques: Visualization

Ruthie: So I want you to show off a little bit. What are some of the techniques that you do? You were talking about work-life balance, personal and professional communication… I’m ready for it! Because we’re talking about the whole human. 

Stefanie: One of the things I really like to do when I go to businesses is give them a visualization of how they can seek to improve. So I’d like you to close your eyes or find a blank spot on the wall. I want you to imagine yourself just as you are, whether you’re sitting or standing perfectly. 

Take a couple of deep breaths and imagine where you are. And then I want you to imagine yourself in the middle of the most expansive place you can think of:

  • at the top of the Grand Canyon looking out over that majestic view
  • at the bottom of the Grand Canyon looking up at all the beautiful rocks and sides
  • standing on the side of one of the Great Lakes and all you see is water
  • or in a beautiful park next to a huge waterfall

I don’t care if it’s a place you’ve been before. It can just be someplace in your imagination. But make it as huge as possible, and feel like you are so small next to it. 

Now I want you to imagine that you are that expanse. You are that Grand Canyon, that huge river, that ocean, that waterfall with all that power and energy. That little speck that you see next to that expanse is your problem.

That’s the difference between you and what you’re working on. That’s what you’re concerned about. You’re bigger than that. 

Take another deep breath, bring yourself back to your body and into the room, and open your eyes. And that literally took 2 minutes. 

Immediate Results from Visualizing

Ruthie: Whoa, hold on! This is weird, but once I became the expanse, it was kind of like when I go to the chiropractor. My chiropractor does this thing where he pulls on my neck, and I feel like I grow 3 inches, and then there’s pain in my neck because he’s released it.

I just had an eerily similar feeling on one side of my neck. I must have just released some stress in my muscles! 

Stefanie: Opening up and recognizing that things are not as difficult as we think they are is always a technique that I’ll use on people. I believe meditative moments can get you that release that quickly. You can do this for yourself.

I’m on my Facebook page weekly, showing people different little techniques that they can utilize to regain that balance, or at least give themselves some mental breathing room. That’s really what you need to get through the day.
